Justice Surya Kant takes oath as 53rd Chief Justice of India

President Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Kant.

NEW DELHI: Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President.

President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Surya Kant, who succeeded the incumbent Chief Justice of India, Bhushan R. Gavai. The President had appointed Justice Kant as the new CJI "in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution," following the recommendation of CJI Gavai.

Justice Gavai, who stepped down from the CJI role upon reaching the age of 65, adhered to the established convention of naming the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as his successor.

Justice Surya Kant, born on February 10, 1962, in a middle-class family in Haryana, began his legal career in Hisar in 1984 before moving to Chandigarh, where he practiced before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
