Indian Revenue Service (IRS) is one of the key Central civil services with a nationwide competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the revenue department. The officials are required to work for the collection, management and policymaking related to various direct and indirect taxes. The officers primarily work in the income tax, sales tax and customs departments, and are also deployed or deputed in various Central agencies operating in states. They also represent the Union government at international forums and negotiate tax treaties as well as play a critical role in preparing the country's fiscal budget.
