These products are deeply rooted in our history and nearly one lakh people are directly supported by these products; says CM.

NEW DELHI: Six traditional items from Assam, like the Assamese Dhol and Jaapi, have received special recognition called Geographical Indication (GI) tags from the Government of India.

Assam Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the information on social media platform, X.

“A big win for Assam’s heritage! Six prestigious GI Tags have been granted to traditional crafts with support from NABARD, RO Guwahati, and facilitated by Padma Shri Dr. Rajani Kant, GI Expert,” he wrote.

Sarma stated that the products awarded GI tags include the renowned Assam Bihu Dhol, Assam Jaapi, Sarthebari Metal Craft, Panimeteka craft (made from water hyacinth), Mising taat (handloom), and the exquisite terracotta works of Asharikandi.

He said, “These products are deeply rooted in our history and nearly one lakh people are directly supported by these products.”

The GI tag system began in India in 2003 during the NDA's rule. It helps recognise products from specific places, showcasing their special qualities, and serves as a trademark in the international market.

Earlier this month, the renowned Majuli Masks or Majuli manuscript paintings from Assam received the GI tag. This tradition is rooted in Assam's neo-Vaishnavite practices dating back to the 16th century, as per experts.
