NEW DELHI: In a significant political development, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader C.P. Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India. His election marks a new chapter in Indian politics, as he assumes the second-highest constitutional office in the country.

Thiru Radhakrishnan, a veteran politician and former Governor of Maharashtra and Jharkhand, secured a decisive victory in the Vice Presidential election held earlier this week. He succeeds Jagdeep Dhankhar, who completed his term amidst widespread appreciation for his role in presiding over the Rajya Sabha.

In his first statement following the announcement of results, Thiru Radhakrishnan expressed gratitude to the Members of Parliament who supported his candidature. He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Constitution, strengthening democratic values, and ensuring the smooth functioning of parliamentary processes.

"It is an honour to serve the nation in this esteemed role. I will strive to discharge my duties with integrity, impartiality, and dedication to the ideals enshrined in our Constitution," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly elected Vice President, calling him a “dedicated public servant with decades of experience in public life.” In a post on X, PM Modi wrote:

"Heartiest congratulations to Thiru C.P. Radhakrishnan on being elected as the Vice President of India. His long-standing commitment to public service and deep understanding of legislative processes will greatly benefit our democracy."

Known for his simplicity, administrative acumen, and clean political image, Thiru Radhakrishnan has had a distinguished political career spanning over four decades. A two-time Member of Parliament from Coimbatore, he also served in key party positions and played a vital role in strengthening the BJP’s presence in Tamil Nadu.

His election is seen as a strategic and symbolic move, representing the growing importance of South India in the national political landscape.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the coming days.
