Says the entire fleet operated by the Delhi government will be fully electric by 2027.
NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the induction of 280 electric buses into the city’s public transport fleet, reaffirming the government’s commitment to green mobility.
“We are adding 280 electric buses to Delhi’s fleet. By 2027, the entire fleet operated by the Delhi government will be fully electric,” Gupta declared during the event. She also revealed that a new electric vehicle (EV) policy is in the pipeline to further promote sustainable transportation in the capital.
Highlighting the modern features of the newly launched buses, she noted, “These buses are a valuable addition to the city’s transport system. They are air-conditioned, low-floor, and equipped with security features like CCTV cameras and panic buttons, ensuring both comfort and safety for commuters.”
Gupta also took the opportunity to criticize previous administrations for neglecting environmental initiatives. “Delhi was denied the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign under the previous government. Our goal this year is to plant 70 lakh trees across the city,” she said.
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav commended the Centre’s efforts to curb vehicular pollution, emphasizing the government’s focus on smart EVs and hydrogen-powered buses.
“The central government is actively working to combat pollution from vehicles. The nationwide push for smart electric and hydrogen buses is a significant step forward,” he said.
Reflecting on the success of the national tree plantation drive, Yadav shared, “Under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, around 109 crore citizens planted nearly 140 crore trees yesterday. This year, Prime Minister Modi planted a Banyan sapling; last year, it was a Peepal. His gift of electric buses to Delhi will go a long way in improving the city’s air quality.”
