NEW DELHI: A high-level Indian delegation led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal concluded a three-day visit to the United States, focusing on deepening bilateral trade and investment relations, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on Friday.

During the visit, Goyal held strategic discussions with senior US officials, including Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative, and Sergio Gor, the U.S. Ambassador-designate to India. Central to these talks was the ongoing negotiation of a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continue dialogue toward a timely and mutually beneficial resolution.

In addition to official engagements, the Indian delegation also interacted with prominent US-based companies and investors. These stakeholders voiced strong confidence in India’s economic outlook and expressed keen interest in expanding their business and investment footprints in the country.

Negotiations on the trade deal have gained momentum in recent months, though progress has faced headwinds. Despite earlier optimism about reaching an interim agreement, US President Donald Trump recently imposed tariffs totaling 50% on certain Indian imports, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The tariffs—25% initially, followed by another 25%—came into effect on August 27.

A key sticking point remains U.S. demands for greater access to India’s agricultural and dairy sectors—areas India remains cautious about due to their critical importance to millions of livelihoods across the country.
