NEW DELHI: Omar Abdullah of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir during a ceremony at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.
The event marks a significant milestone as it is the first elected government in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of the region into two Union Territories.
Omar Abdullah, who has previously held the position of Chief Minister, comes from a political lineage. His grandfather, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, was the first Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after its accession to India and later served as the Chief Minister. His father, Farooq Abdullah, has also been the Chief Minister of the erstwhile state three times.
The swearing-in ceremony saw the attendance of prominent leaders from the INDIA Bloc, including Akhilesh Yadav, Supriya Sule, Prakash Karat and Kanimozhi.
The recent assembly elections were contested across 90 seats in a three-phase election, with results declared on October 8. The National Conference, in alliance with Congress, secured 48 seats. The National Conference led the alliance, while the Congress managed to win only six seats.
