The initiative is designed to strengthen India’s R&D ecosystem; says NITI Aayog Member Abhay Karandikar.
NEW DELHI: India's ambitious Rs. 1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund is set to transform the country's technology landscape. According to NITI Aayog member Abhay Karandikar, the initiative will unlock roughly Rs. 10 lakh crore in private sector investment over the coming decade, generate skilled jobs, and incubate at least 10 world-class domestic companies.
According to medi reports, Karandikar noted that the scheme is structured to multiply government capital significantly while cementing India's footprint in cutting-edge tech domains.
Key Highlights of the RDI Initiative
Massive Financial Leverage: The Rs. 1 lakh crore government outlay aims to draw a 10x multiplier in private funding over 10 years.
Strategic Technology Focus: Priority sectors include AI, quantum computing, biotechnology, space tech, advanced materials, and energy security.
Targeted Support: Backs projects at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 and above, focusing on innovations ready to move beyond early-stage research into commercial viability.
Flexible Funding Models: Offers long-term, zero-interest loans and equity investments, covering up to 50% of the assessed project cost.
Implementation Body: Managed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF).
Tapping into Deep-Tech and Atmanirbharta
The fund directly addresses historical gaps in India's R&D landscape. Currently, India's Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) hovers around 0.8% of GDP, with the private sector contributing only about 30% compared to 70% from public funds.
By sharing investment risks, the RDI Fund aims to ease capital constraints for deep-tech businesses—where long research cycles and high costs often deter private players—while advancing the vision of Atmanirbharta in critical technologies.
Supported by India's rising innovation footprint—including its jump on the Global Innovation Index—the initiative is poised to bolster domestic manufacturing, build globally competitive firms, and expand high-value employment across the country.
